Peas Porridge Hodgepodge

I am taking a few minutes while vacationing on beautiful Grand Cayman to join in the Wednesday Hodgepodge. Click here for my first vacation post. Wish you could all be enjoying a good book from a beach chair, or whatever your idea of a perfect day might be. While you are imagining just that, be sure to click on the button to visit our hostess, Joyce. A visit to the Hodgepodge makes Wednesdays pretty close to perfect. Well, almost, anyway.

1. March 20th is the first day of spring...is she a lion or a lamb in your part of the world?
Well, today, my part of the world looks like this. So I would have to say the kindest, most gentlest of lambs. For which I am very grateful.

Especially when the weather at home looks like this:

2. What's the most dreaded task on your spring clean to-do list?  Do you have a 'plan of attack'?
The most dreaded task on my spring clean to-do list would be making a spring clean to-do list. Seriously. And no, there is definitely no plan of attack.

3. Peas...love 'em or hate 'em?  What's a favorite dish you make using peas?
I wouldn't say I love 'em, but I learned to eat peas years ago when I was babysitting and these were the favorites of the little girl in the family. Of course, I am pretty sure the key here is the 'butter sauce' part. Everything tastes better with butter. :)
I don't think I even have any pea recipes. They are not a favorite at our house.

4.  Do you feel under appreciated?
I guess we all do now and then, but as a rule, no, not really.

5. Have you been using Google Reader?  If so, what are you switching to now that GR has announced retirement?  If not, how do you read your favorite blogs?
No, I have not been using Google Reader. I'm not exactly sure what a Google Reader is. I read my favorite blogs by having them sent to my email.

6. Anne Bradstreet is credited with the following quote~

"If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant;  if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome."

Agree or Disagree?  Why?
I do agree. I think that experiencing difficulty in life can make us more appreciative of the blessings we do have. And the part about winter? It does make spring even more welcome.  Come on spring!
I am reminded of Psalm 30:5, which I have as my March desktop calendar from (in)courage.
"Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning." Psalm 30:5.

And in my morning devotion today, this verse:
Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like the watercourses in the Negeb.
May those who sow in tears reap with shouts of joy.
Those who go out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, carrying their sheaves.
Psalm 126:4-6

It is a good one for farmers, or anyone who puts in the sweat and tears of hard work in order to see a reward.

7.  When did you last 'spring for something'?  What was it?
It was Monday evening, when I purchased a plane ticket for our youngest son to join us here on Grand Cayman so the whole family will be together. That would be for his second spring break.

8.  Insert your own random thought here?
One of my favorite things to do on vacation is read. When the kids were little, I remember one trip when they begged me not to start another book. I do tend to get a little absorbed in my reading. For instance, by the second day of this vacation, I had started my second book.

The first this trip was the young adult book, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. It was recommended to me by my friend Ruthann, and it was so, so good. If you haven't read it, you really must. So many good lessons for young and old alike.  And Auggie will capture your heart.

Auggie, the main character, has a teacher named Mr. Browne, who introduced precepts to his 5th graders, and presented a new one to them each month. My favorite was this one, a quote by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer:

When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind.

What a world it would be if we all could remember this one. Choose kind.
