Get in Line for the Hodgepodge

Time for the Wednesday Hodgepodge. Joyce does a fabulous job of hosting the party each week. Click on over and pay her a visit. Be sure and visit the other participants as well.

1. Do you send Christmas cards? If so about how many will you send this year? How do you display the cards you receive? Or don't you? (gasp!)
I always send Christmas cards. I love sending and receiving them, and ours always includes a photo. This year's photo was taken last weekend when everyone was home for Thanksgiving. I will share the photo here after the actual cards have been mailed. I send around 60 or so. The cards we receive are displayed taped to the panes of the china cupboard or the sun room doors.

2. When do kids become adults?
Kids become adults when they get a job, move out, and pay their own bills.
Not mentioning any names.

3. Does your 'beauty regimen' change with the seasons?
Um... 'beauty regimen'? I can't say that I actually have one. Obviously.

4. What's something you like to eat that might cause another person to turn up their nose?
I don't eat many exotic foods, so the only thing I can think of is tapioca pudding. When I was a child, we occasionally visited my great-grandparents on their farm in northern Indiana. I loved the farm:  the kittens, the calves, the outhouse (such a novelty!), the chickens, and when I came inside, my great-grandma's tapioca pudding. She made pearl tapioca, and I thought it was delicious. It could be found under the cloth on the table, along with spoons and bowls, ready for eating. I have never made it myself, though I occasionally pick up a small tub in the grocery store. But it's just not the same. So, how do you feel about tapioca pudding?

5. Gloves or mittens?
I wear gloves, but I love mittens too. I still have a pair of mittens I made in high school for my knitting project in "Creative Needlecraft." One of those tough senior year classes.

6. What's the longest queue you've ever been in? Was it worth it? Queue=line but doesn't queue sound nicer?
When my daughter showed her horse at the Indiana State Fair, the procedure for check-in included a very long line. If you chose to arrive at the fairgrounds the night before show day, you were directed (truck, trailer, horse, and all) to a lot several blocks away to wait your turn for entry to the barn. This meant long columns of rigs waiting for hours in the stifling hot beautiful August weather. They would release us, 10 at a time, to make our way to the fairgrounds to wait in another line. So. Much. Fun. Not. We did make the best of the situation, though, pulling out grills and frozen lemonade, and visiting with the others in line. Jennifer was all about socializing at the horse show. :)
And yes, it was worth it the next day when Jennifer and PeeWee were judged horsemanship champions.
Jennifer, age 13, PeeWee, age 17.

7. Besides Christmas, what is one thing you are looking forward to in the month of December?
Next week, we get to have these two cuties stay with us for two days and two nights while their parents go on a little trip. The first is our granddaughter Haleigh, almost two.

And this is our great nephew Harper, almost three. He's one of three (triplets, that is), but his sisters are staying with their grandma. Sort of a divide and conquer plan. Teehee.
I know we will have lots of fun. I've been taking my vitamins. :)

8. Insert your own random thought here.
Yesterday, the rain turned to snow, and this is how our yard looked last night.

Ready or not!
Happy Wednesday, everyone!

Giving Thanks

We had a two day Thanksgiving celebration, beginning on Thursday at my brother's house. Here, his wife, Cheryl, and her daughter, Sam work on some dessert while the turkey cooks. Sam made delicious banana pudding too. Yum!

Host Ted makes sure everyone is well fed and watered (wined?).

Nana, Jennifer, Boomie, and Bryan enjoying the hors d'oeuvres.

Nana and Jennifer.

Big Jon even came along.

The beautiful turkey.

Jim did the carving.

We also had pie. Pecan and Sugar Cream. And I even made the Pioneer Woman's Perfect Pie Crust. Even I can do it.

Bryan and Jennifer.

Andrew, Darci, and the kids stopped by on their way back from Darci's family celebration. Ella was sacked out.

Matthew, however, was awake, of course.

We thought it was cute that Bryan and Matthew were dressed almost alike.

Jennifer and Sam snuggling with the Dora blanket.

Adam and Alli stopped by too.

And Evan and Dara came a bit later as well.

Jim moved downstairs for his post-turkey nap.

On Friday, we had our Thanksgiving meal at our house with all the kids, grandkids, grandparents, and my other brother and his wife. I didn't do a good job of getting a picture of everyone... it's hard to cook, serve, hostess, and most importantly, enjoy each moment when you're trying to take pictures. And I do believe that being present in the moment should be the goal. The moments pass so quickly. As Grandma Stewart says, "and pretty soon, you're ninety."

The table was set. Notice the basket?

Cell phones were collected before we could begin eating. Put your phone in the basket, or you don't get to eat. Harsh, I know.

Matthew is ready to eat!

Nana lights the candles.

Matthew and Grandma.

Nana did bring turkey for the traditionalists, but the star of the meal is the delicious and lovely traditional beef tenderloin.

Haleigh has a special spot for the meal.

Continuing our eating marathon, we had biscuits and gravy for Saturday brunch. Another family favorite.

Saturday afternoon, we watched Purdue bring the bucket back home after beating that team down in Bloomington. Thank goodness!

And since it was David's birthday, we celebrated with cake and ice cream. Chocolate chip upside down cake. Another family favorite. (We have lots of favorites.)

Matthew helped David with the candles. He arranged 2 candles on one side and 9 candles on the other. How can I have a 29 year old son???

Happy Birthday to you...

Happy Birthday to you...

Happy Birthday, dear David...

Happy Birthday to you!
And after the cake, we all went to the basement for a family movie night, ushering in the Christmas season by watching the ever popular and oh so entertaining, Elf. "The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear."

Ever Grateful, Ever True

After a great Thanksgiving weekend, it's back to blogging, finally.
We started off our thankfulness with a trip to West Lafayette to watch the Boilermaker basketball team take on Western Michigan. But first, we stopped by this famous Purdue establishment. I always thought it was an ice cream shop. I was wrong.

David got to enjoy a cold beverage with his little brother for the very first time. :)

Boomie was there to share the fun as well.

We moved from Harry's to Bruno's for Bruno dough and pizza. Matthew took this photo of Andrew and Jonathan with Shylah's phone.

On to the newly renovated Mackey Arena where we were happy to see this guy, all healed up and ready to play. Matthew continues to pray for Robbie Hummel every night. We might all say a prayer for his knees.

We noticed some new banners for some of our favorite guys up in the rafters. We miss you JJ and Smooge!

This is little Lewis Jackson. I say little because he's listed at 5'9", 165 pounds. Small for a basketball player, but he plays big.

Robbie is ready to go.

Huddle up. Boiler up!

Purdue Pete cheers from a good spot during the game.

I even found Pharaoh and Cleopatra in the crowd.

The scoreboard showed a favorable final outcome for the Boilermakers.

Purdue Pete celebrated the victory.

Jennifer and Bryan.

I love it when we are able to get a sibs picture. They love each other.

And the whole gang. I love them!

Boomie and our five. For those of you who don't know, Boomie is my dad. The nickname was given to him by our oldest son, David, and was originally Boom Boom, because they liked playing the drum. It has evolved into Boomie, or sometimes the Boomster.

This is a picture of Jim, and our friend Bill Fall. He has been an usher at Mackey Arena for 44 years, 42 at the same gate. He is 94 years old, and his wife was a sorority sister of Jim's mom. We rented a house from Bill when we lived in West Lafayette. He is pretty remarkable.
It was a great game, and a fun way to spend Thanksgiving eve.
